Vintage Yankee North Bros No. 2101 10” Ratcheting Bit Brace

Vintage North Brothers “Yankee” No. 2101 bit brace with a 10” sweep, freshly serviced and ready to go back to work.

This is an original North Brothers “Yankee” No. 2101 10” brace, made in Philadelphia, USA, from the period before the Yankee design was taken over and sold under the Stanley name. The 2101 series is the heavy-duty, sealed-ratchet design used for decades by telephone and utility crews. This one is marked on the chuck collar “NO 2101 – NORTH BROS MFG CO – PHILA PA USA” and the sweep arm is stamped “No. 2101 – 10 IN.” The pad is marked “YANKEE.”

Based on the markings and construction, this example was most likely made sometime in the 1930s–1940s (North Brothers was acquired by Stanley in 1946; I’ve listed this under the 1940s decade for Etsy).

Condition

• Mechanically excellent. Ratchet engages crisply in all three positions with no slip or binding. About nine clicks per full revolution.
• Chuck opens and closes smoothly with full travel. Jaws meet evenly when fully closed and retract into the body when fully open.
• Handles both rotate smoothly. There is very minor side-to-side play if you deliberately rock them, but nothing noticeable under normal use. No visible cracks.
• Finish: Original plating shows honest wear, small scratches, and speckled age spotting consistent with an 80+ year old working tool. No heavy pitting or abuse.
• Pad & side handle: Original glossy dark finish is ~95% intact with “YANKEE” clearly legible on the pad. A few tiny paint specks remain down in small nicks where removing them would damage the original finish.

Light restoration & service

This brace has been carefully cleaned and serviced so it’s shop ready:

• Degreased and cleaned to remove shop grime while preserving the factory finish and stamps.
• Ratchet flushed via the oil port, then lubricated with light gun oil for a smooth, positive action.
• Chuck jaws and springs cleaned, lightly oiled, and reassembled; tested on both square and round shanks.
• Handles cleaned with mild solvent, then treated with a light beeswax / boiled linseed oil blend and hand-buffed to a dry, satin feel.
• All metal given a light protective coat and buffed so it’s clean in the hand, not greasy.

No paint, plating, or “restoration” grinding was added—just careful cleanup and lubrication so the brace keeps its original character.
