Detailed Description

Tool

Stanley No. 921 12-inch sweep ratcheting brace with enclosed ratchet and nickel-plated chuck. Takes standard square-taper auger bits and other brace tools. Likely mid-20th century production.

Included Bits

This listing includes two vintage bits that fit the brace:

  • 5/8” Russell Jennings auger bit (marked “10”) – classic double-twist wood bit for clean through-holes.
  • Expansive bit, 1¾”–3” range – adjustable cutter for large-diameter holes in wood.

Both bits are vintage users, not new; they show finish wear but are sharp enough for typical woodworking and can be honed further to taste.

Condition

  • Frame is straight with a uniform gray patina and scattered light pitting from prior use.
  • “STANLEY” and “No 921 – 12 IN” stampings are clear and readable.
  • Nickel plating on the chuck shows noticeable wear and loss, but the knurling remains crisp and easy to grip.
  • Ratchet selector works smoothly in left, right, and lock positions.
  • Head pad appears to be the original black composite; surface has scratches and scuffs but no visible cracks.
  • Side handle is solid hardwood with a warm dark finish, small dings and character marks, and one small chip near the ferrule as shown. No looseness in normal use.
  • Bit shanks are straight; cutting edges have typical age staining but no major chips.

Ruler and any props in photos are not included.

Restoration Performed

  • Brace disassembled at the chuck and ratchet for inspection and cleaning.
  • Old oil and grime removed from internal parts; ratchet spring tuned for positive engagement.
  • Metal surfaces cleaned to remove active rust while preserving the original patina and stampings.
  • Internal moving parts lubricated with light oil; exterior metal treated with Ballistol and finished with paste wax for protection.
  • Wooden side handle cleaned, given a coat of boiled linseed oil, and finished with a beeswax balm for a smooth, dry feel.
  • Included bits cleaned, lightly oiled, and waxed to protect from future rust.
  • Final function check: chuck opens and closes smoothly, jaws grip securely, and ratchet operates cleanly in both directions.
