Vintage J.C. Higgins Metal Cantilever Tackle Box – Sears, circa 1950s/early 1960s

A substantial vintage J.C. Higgins fishing tackle box with a classic four-tray cantilever interior and embossed J.C. Higgins fish graphics on both sides. J.C. Higgins was a Sears sporting-goods brand, and this box has the unmistakable mid-century industrial construction and appearance associated with the period.

This one has been cleaned and preserved rather than refinished. The original silver/gray exterior finish remains intact, including the scratches, scuffs, stains, worn areas and other marks accumulated through decades of use.

One particularly interesting piece of its history remains on the top: a previous owner stenciled “KEEFE” in black lettering. I intentionally retained it rather than risk damaging more of the surrounding original finish. It gives the box the appearance of something that actually spent its life in someone’s fishing gear rather than a newly refinished decorative piece.

Condition

Good functional vintage condition with substantial cosmetic evidence of age and use.

The exterior has scratches, scuffs, discoloration, finish loss, small dings and worn areas. The bottom shows particularly heavy surface wear. The interior main compartment retains staining and discoloration that did not come out during conservative cleaning. Please review the photographs closely; these characteristics are intentionally shown rather than concealed.

The cantilever trays open and close and the metal divider system is present. The handle and latch are intact.

The original cork tray liners had deteriorated badly and were no longer serviceable. They were removed and replaced with new natural cork, cut to fit beneath the original metal dividers. The cork is mechanically retained rather than permanently glued in place, keeping the replacement reversible. Original liners are included for provenance.

The box has not been repainted or aggressively refinished.
