Vintage Industrial Footwear Cutting Die

Vintage industrial footwear cutting die marked BUCKRUM QTR, cleaned and stabilized with light rust removal, mineral oil, and paste wax. This heavy all-steel production tool appears to have been used in shoe manufacturing to cut a buckram component. It retains readable factory markings, an unusual specialized cutting profile, and substantial evidence of its working life.

Tool details

Heavy forged industrial cutting die with visible markings reading OUT, 9389, BUCKRUM QTR, and 11 1/2–13 1/2 B. Overall length is just under 6 1/2 inches. Heavy all-steel construction with a flared striking shank and specialized cutting body.

Research into this tool originally began with an identification as a leather strap punch, but comparison with related dies from the same group provided better evidence for its original use. Other surviving dies carry size ranges and width designations consistent with footwear production, and a second similarly shaped die carries the same BUCKRUM QTR and 11 1/2–13 1/2 B markings.

“Buckrum” is a historical variant spelling of buckram, a stiffened fabric historically used in shoe manufacture as a reinforcing and stiffening material. The precise meaning of QTR, 9389, and OUT, and the exact shoe component this die produced, have not been confirmed.

Condition

Good vintage industrial condition with age wear, scattered staining, darkened patina, light remaining oxidation in recesses, and visible old shop/use marks. Stampings remain readable. The body is solid. The specialized cutting edge retains four intentional projections/notches along one section; these are part of the cutting profile rather than damage.

Restoration performed

Light hand rust removal only. Treated with mineral oil and sealed with a light coat of paste wax. It was intentionally not polished bright so the original surface, markings, and evidence of use remain intact.

Ideal use

An unusual piece for collectors of vintage shoemaking tools, industrial production tooling, footwear history, or specialized cutting dies. Because the exact original component and operating requirements remain unidentified, it is offered primarily as a collectible and historical tool rather than for modern production use.
