Vintage Vlchek Babbitt Bearing Scraper

This is an original Vlchek Tool Co. babbitt bearing scraper, made in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. It features the classic slotted spear-point scraping blade forged on a steel shank, fitted to a turned wood handle with brass ferrule and peened tang.

Under strong raking light, the blade shows the faint Vlchek triangle logo with “VLCHEK CLEVELAND”, confirming it as an authentic Vlchek piece. Vlchek began as a Cleveland blacksmith shop in the late 1800s and grew into a well-known American hand tool manufacturer supplying mechanics and early automotive tool kits. 

This scraper was carefully cleaned and stabilized, not “restored to new.” It still looks like an honest old shop tool, but it’s now free of loose rust and has a smooth, comfortable handle.

Features & Condition

• Blade: Slender spear-point blade with a long central slot. Edges are square and crisp as expected for a scraper, not reground like a knife. Dark, even patina with light pitting and staining but no cracks, welds, or repairs.
• Marking: Faint but visible Vlchek triangle logo with “VLCHEK CLEVELAND” on the blade under raking light.
• Shank: Straight steel shank with honest wear and patina; surface rust has been removed and sealed.
• Handle: Turned wood handle with brass ferrule and peened tang through a washer at the butt. Solid and tight in the hand with no major splits. Original black paint remnants at the shoulder were preserved for character.
• Finish: Metal has been lightly oiled and waxed for a dry, non-greasy protective finish. Handle was cleaned, lightly sanded, treated with boiled linseed oil, then finished with a beeswax/mineral oil balm for a smooth, satin feel.
• Includes a small printed care sheet with tips for storing and maintaining vintage tools.

Restoration Work Performed

Metal (blade & shank)

1. Dry-brushed with a steel hand wire brush to knock off loose, flaky rust while avoiding the logo area. 2. Main rust removal with 3M 7447 (maroon) pad + WD-40, wiping away the slurry periodically. 3. Logo area cleaned very gently so the triangular “VLCHEK CLEVELAND” stamp remained crisp. 4. Outer and inner edges inspected and left in original scraper geometry—only light pad work and spot deburring where needed. 5. Final degrease and then a thin application of light oil followed by paste wax, buffed to a dry sheen.

Handle

1. Wiped down with mineral spirits to remove surface grime and soften paint spatters. 2. Light hand sanding with 220/320 grit, with the grain, just enough to smooth the surface while preserving patina and traces of original black paint. 3. One thin coat of boiled linseed oil, allowed to soak and fully wiped off. 4. Finished with a homemade beeswax + mineral oil balm, then buffed aggressively for a dry, satin feel. 5. Peened tang and washer at the butt inspected and left intact; edges are not sharp in the hand.

Condition Notes

This is a genuine vintage tool, not a reproduction. Expect age-appropriate cosmetic wear: patina, small pits, and light staining in the steel, plus minor marks in the wood handle. All rust is stabilized and there are no structural cracks observed in the blade or handle. Sold as a collectible / light-use tool—buyer is responsible for any sharpening or further tuning to their specific application.
