Tool Details

Vintage Lufkin No. 066 “Red End” folding carpenter’s rule measuring 72 inches (6 feet) when fully extended. The rule is constructed from painted wood sections with brass joint hardware and features highly legible black graduations with distinctive red Lufkin, Red End, arrow, and 16-inch markings.

Visible markings include “066,” “LUFKIN,” “RED END,” “P.R. APP’D. 212 Tb,” and the wonderfully utilitarian “OIL ALL JOINTS.”

Based on research into comparable Lufkin rules and markings, I believe this example dates to approximately the 1970s, although an exact year of manufacture has not been established.

Condition

Good functional vintage condition. All sections are present, and the folding joints operate properly. The original white finish shows scattered discoloration, small marks, edge wear, and other evidence of its previous working life. The black and red graduations remain particularly clear and attractive.

The brass hardware retains an aged finish with normal discoloration and wear. Please review all photographs closely; they form an important part of the condition description.

Restoration / Conservation

This rule received a conservative cleaning rather than a cosmetic restoration. The goal was to preserve its original painted surfaces, graduations, brass hardware, and working-tool character. It has not been repainted or refinished.
