Cleaned, lightly lubricated, functionally checked, and ready for use or display.

About This Tool

This is a vintage L.S. Starrett Co. No. 436MRL-25 outside micrometer, made in Athol, Massachusetts, USA.

The micrometer has a 0–25 mm measuring range. Its original Starrett instruction sheet specifies a 0.5 mm screw pitch, with one spindle revolution advancing 0.5 mm. The thimble is divided into 50 graduations, giving a reading of 0.01 mm per graduation.

An especially useful feature is the conversion reference printed directly around the thimble, providing common fractional-inch equivalents in decimal inches.

This example is unusually complete and includes:

  • Starrett No. 436MRL-25 metric micrometer
  • Original red Starrett box with model label
  • Original inner box and protective packing
  • Two Starrett micrometer adjustment wrenches
  • Original Starrett wrench envelope
  • Original Starrett micrometer instruction and reading sheet

Condition

The micrometer is in good vintage working condition with normal cosmetic wear from age and previous use.

The original black frame finish remains substantially intact with scratches, edge wear, and finish loss visible in the photographs. The satin-finished sleeve and thimble remain clearly legible. The spindle and measuring surfaces show normal vintage wear.

The original cardboard box has considerable shelf and edge wear but remains intact, and the model label is clearly readable. The original paperwork shows age, folds, discoloration, and minor staining. The wrench envelope and both adjustment wrenches are present.

Please review all photographs closely; they are part of the condition description.

Testing

The spindle moves smoothly throughout its full 0–25 mm travel and returns correctly to zero.

The micrometer was also functionally checked against a digital caliper at approximately 19.57 mm, with matching readings to 0.01 mm.

This is a functional verification only. The micrometer has not been professionally calibrated or tested against certified gauge blocks and is not being represented as having current traceable calibration.

Restoration

The goal was preservation rather than refinishing.

  • Carefully cleaned
  • Spindle and appropriate moving surfaces lightly lubricated
  • Original black frame finish preserved
  • Black painted frame protected with microcrystalline wax
  • Satin-finished graduated surfaces left unpolished
  • Measuring faces kept clean and free of wax
  • Original box, paperwork, packaging, wrenches, and wrench envelope preserved rather than refinished

No attempt was made to remove the honest cosmetic wear accumulated during its working life.

Ideal For

  • Machinists
  • Toolmakers
  • Precision measuring
  • Home machine shops
  • Vintage tool collections
  • Starrett collectors
  • Industrial or machinist-shop displays
  • Gifts for machinists, engineers, and tool collectors

This is particularly appealing as a collection piece because so much of the original Starrett package has remained together.
