Vintage North Bros “YANKEE” No. 30A spiral screwdriver

Classic push-driven “YANKEE” screwdriver made by North Bros. Mfg. Co., Philadelphia, PA, marked with the Dec. 11, 1923 patent date and “Made in United States of America.” This is the mid-size No. 30A model with a wood handle and 9/32” (No. 30) bit size. Includes a vintage flat-slot bit so it’s ready to go back to work out of the box.

Approximate size: about 14 3/4” long closed, 20” extended with the bit installed.

Condition

Clean vintage condition with honest wear from use.
Nickel plating shows small dings, scratches and light age staining but no active rust.
Stamps for “YANKEE – North Bros. Mfg. Co. – Phila. PA – Pat. Dec. 11. 23 – Made in United States of America” are legible.
Original red-stained wood handle shows dings, scuffs, end wear and chip-out around the ferrule. Cracks and chip-out have been stabilized and the handle is solid with no looseness or movement.
Ratchet works properly in both directions and in the center “locked” position.
Spiral shaft extends and retracts smoothly with a good spring feel.
Chuck opens and closes correctly and holds the bit securely.

This is a working, user-grade tool, not a collector-mint example. Expect cosmetic wear appropriate to a 90-plus-year-old screwdriver.

Restoration & service performed

I aim for clean, stable, and functional, not over-polished: 1. Tool was fully wiped down and degreased, then old grime and light oxidation were removed from the body, chuck, and spiral shaft while preserving plating and stampings. 2. Ratchet mechanism and spiral shaft were lubricated with light oil and cycled until action was smooth in both directions. 3. Wood handle was cleaned, cracks were wicked with thin adhesive and chip-out edges were de-splintered and smoothed. 4. Handle received a light refinishing with drying oil and wax for a comfortable, satin feel while keeping the original aged red color. 5. All metal surfaces were finished with a thin protective wax to help resist future rust.

A printed care and use sheet is included so the next owner can keep this tool working for years.
