Vintage North Bros. “Yankee” Handyman No. 33H spiral ratchet screwdriver with brass body and painted wood handle, freshly cleaned, oiled, and waxed in my shop and ready to go back to work or display in a vintage tool collection.

This is a vintage North Bros. Mfg. Co. “YANKEE HANDYMAN” No. 33H spiral ratchet screwdriver, made in Philadelphia, PA, USA. The brass ferrule is fully legible (YANKEE HANDYMAN No. 33H NORTH BROS. MFG. CO. PHILA. PA. MADE IN U.S.A. PAT. 103675) and it features the classic cut-out “Christmas tree” selector window. Overall length is about 7½” extended and about 5¾” closed (without the bit), with a turned wood handle and steel spiral shaft. Includes one flat-head bit.

Era

Based on the patent number and markings, this is an early North Bros “Handyman” era tool, likely from the late 1930s–early 1940s, prior to the Stanley acquisition.

Condition

Mechanism runs smoothly in both directions; ratchet selector works as it should.
Bit seats firmly in the chuck.
Brass shows even, brightened patina with light age scratches.
Steel spiral, chuck, and ferrule show honest darkening but no heavy rust or pitting.
Handle is solid with original black finish, typical small dings from toolbox use, and one round area where old oil had softened the original varnish and the wood shows through—cosmetic only, and visible in photos.
Tool does not lock in the fully closed position; it is still fully usable, and I don’t see evidence that this model was ever spring-locking closed, but this behavior is noted for transparency.

Restoration work done

All work was done by hand in my small shop: 1. Wiped down and degreased with mineral spirits, carefully removing the old dried oil ring with a razor blade. 2. Light hand sanding of the handle with 320 grit to smooth raised grain and blend damage while preserving the original character. 3. Light oil and grey 3M pad on the brass to brighten it while leaving vintage patina. 4. Ballistol on the steel surfaces, followed by Hoppes oil on the internal working parts and ratchet mechanism, then cycled repeatedly until the action was smooth. 5. Thin coat of boiled linseed oil (BLO) on the handle, wiped back, then finished with a beeswax balm for a warm, dry feel. 6. Paste wax on exposed metal to seal and protect for storage and display.
