Vintage Pipe Wrench 14" Stillson

Vintage 14-inch Stillson pipe wrench made by The Erie Tool Works of Erie, Pennsylvania, cleaned and tuned for smooth operation while keeping its honest shop patina. The original turned wood handle has age checks that have been stabilized and finished in oil and wax, and the jaws still bite cleanly. A solid piece of American tool history for light use, display, or shop décor.

Likely manufactured in the 1930s–1940s era; listed as 1940s to fit Etsy’s decade options.

Condition

• Mechanics:
• Jaws travel smoothly from fully closed to fully open with no binding.
• Knurled adjusting nut turns freely; threads are clean and well-oiled.
• Spring and jaw rack engage correctly; the wrench bites and releases as it should.
• Steel:
• Dark silver/grey patina with scattered staining and light pitting from age and use.
• Stamps remain clear and legible on both sides.
• Teeth show normal wear but still have good, sharp profile for gripping pipe.
• Handle:
• Original hardwood handle with a deep, dark aged finish and visible grain.
• Long shrinkage checks and a small scar from past use are present and clearly shown in the photos.
• Cracks and slight looseness have been stabilized with thin CA adhesive and the handle feels secure under hand torque.
• Because of the age checks, this wrench is best for light, occasional use and display rather than daily heavy-duty work.

Restoration work performed

This wrench has been fully cleaned and serviced in my small shop:

1. Disassembly & inspection

• Upper jaw and knurled nut removed from the frame, all components inspected for cracks or damage.

2. Rust & grime removal – metal

• Loose rust and dirt brushed off by hand.
• Knurled nut and jaw rack soaked in rust remover to clean internal threads and teeth, then brushed and rinsed.
• Frame and head scrubbed with 3M maroon pads and light oil to remove active rust while preserving the original patina, stamps, and machining marks.

3. Mechanism cleaning & lubrication

• Jaw slide, spring area, and threads flushed with solvent to remove hardened grease.
• Moving parts re-lubricated with light oil and worked through full travel for smooth, even operation.

4. Handle stabilization & finish

• Tang/handle junction and open cracks degreased, then wicked with thin CA to stabilize both the age checks and the previous looseness.
• Handle cleaned with mineral spirits, lightly smoothed, then finished with boiled linseed oil and a beeswax topcoat for a warm, low-sheen feel.

5. Final protection

• All metal wiped with Ballistol, then given a thin coat of paste wax and buffed dry for added rust protection without a glossy “repainted” look.
