Detailed description

A compact COES knife-handle monkey wrench with original wood handle and clear markings on both sides: “COES WRENCH CO. WORCESTER MASS.” on one side and “L. COES PATD DEC. 15, 1891 APR. 22, 1895” on the other. This is the classic smooth-jaw adjustable monkey wrench form, and the wood-handle “knife handle” construction is consistent with late-19th-century Coes wrench patents and trademark use.

This wrench measures just over 8 inches long. The adjusting mechanism moves smoothly end to end. The jaws do not close 100%, which appears to be age/use wear rather than damage. The original wood handle remains in place and shows lateral age cracks on both sides that were stabilized; the handle is not loose. The metal retains aged patina, tool marks, and surface wear rather than a polished-over finish.

Restoration on this example was intentionally conservative: light cleanup only, followed by oil and wax, with handle crack stabilization to keep the original grip serviceable and presentable. No heavy buffing or over-restoration was done.
