Antique Whitman & Barnes 18" Knife Handle Wrench

Tool Details

This is an antique Whitman & Barnes 18-inch Knife Handle Wrench, a distinctive wood-handled adjustable wrench produced by one of America’s important early tool manufacturers.

Whitman & Barnes was advertising this pattern as its “Knife Handle Wrench” by 1904, and examples continued to appear in catalogs through the 1910s. Based on the documented production history and W&B markings, this example is estimated to date from approximately 1904–1920.

The Whitman & Barnes diamond trademark remains visible on the head. Portions of the mark, particularly the ampersand and B, are very faint from age, wear, and surface pitting.

The wrench also carries old hand-applied user markings. “FVQ” was individually pecked into the steel, while a large X was cut into the opposite side of the bar. Their original meaning is unknown, but they have been left intact as part of the wrench’s working history.

Condition

The adjustment mechanism operates properly, and the movable jaw travels along the bar as intended.

The original wooden knife handle remains intact but shows substantial longitudinal checking and splitting from age. The splits were stabilized with epoxy while preserving the handle’s existing shape rather than forcing the old, shrunken wood back together. The repair remains visible in the photographs.

The steel retains extensive original patina along with oxidation staining, pitting, scratches, dents, and other evidence of a long working life. This wrench has intentionally not been polished or refinished to look new.

Restoration

The seized adjustment mechanism was treated and carefully worked free. Metal surfaces were cleaned conservatively to remove loose rust and grime while retaining the original patina and markings.

The original wooden handle was stabilized with epoxy, then treated to restore and protect the aged wood. Metal components were lubricated and given a protective wax coating.

No attempt was made to remove the original user markings, heavy patina, or other evidence of age.

Ideal Use

A substantial display piece for an antique tool collection, machinist or workshop display, industrial décor, or a collection of early American adjustable wrenches.

Although the adjustment mechanism is functional, the age and repaired condition of the original wooden handle make this better suited to collection and display than heavy modern shop use.
