Heavy pressed-steel kerosene “Toledo Torch” used as a warning flare along roads, bridges, and railroad lines in the early–mid 20th century

Patent 1,732,708 for an outdoor warning-signal burner was issued in 1929, so this piece dates to the late 1920s–1930s.

Condition & Restoration

This torch was carefully cleaned and stabilized while preserving its honest workwear look:

Exterior washed, then cleaned with light oil and fine abrasive pads
Loose, flaky rust removed; tight, dark rust and original paint intentionally preserved
Interior tank shaken out with hardware, rinsed, treated with Evapo-Rust, and rinsed again
Bottom is solid with no known leaks (but see “Display Only” note below)
Finished with a coat of paste wax for a dry, low-sheen surface that’s easy to dust
Original wick and filler material were removed and discarded

Expect dings, light pitting, and wear consistent with a nearly 100-year-old working tool—exactly the kind of patina collectors look for.
