Tool details

This is a vintage Hopkins “Pro-File” surfacing tool, made by Hopkins Mfg. Corp. of Emporia, Kansas (patent pending badge on the top rail). Hopkins was known for mid-century auto-body shop tools, and this Pro-File appears to have been used for shaping lead or early body filler repairs.

• Overall length: approx. 14 in (35.5 cm)
• Double wooden handles: rear pistol-grip tote + front knob
• Steel body with a row of large lightening holes
• Underside has 26 vertical plates that form a coarse “comb” to cut or texture soft material

It makes a fantastic industrial wall piece in a garage, shop, or man-cave – and it’s still functional if you’d like to put it back to work on soft filler or as a heavy texture tool.

Condition

Honest working condition with stabilized wear and preserved patina:

• Handles:
• Original hardwood tote and knob, cleaned and finished in oil and wax.
• Tote shows several old hairline cracks that have been wicked full-depth with thin CA glue; now solid in use.
• Tip of the tote “horn” is missing from past use – cosmetic only, grip is comfortable.
• Most original black paint is worn away; traces remain at the top and base of the tote and at the base of the knob. The rest is smooth bare wood with warm color.
• Metal:
• Tool was fully disassembled (9 screws, 2 side rails, 3 tubes, and all 26 plates) for cleaning.
• Active rust was removed while keeping the factory texture and age; you’ll still see light pitting, staining, and shop marks appropriate to a mid-century working tool.
• All plates are present and evenly aligned; the scarifying edge is straight.
• Plate and badge lettering are clear and readable: “Pro-File – Patent Pending – Hopkins Mfg. Corp. – Emporia, Kansas.”

No cracks or repairs in the metal. Edges are still fairly sharp – this is a real tool, not a reproduction.

Restoration work performed

I specialize in carefully restoring vintage hand tools for use and display. For this piece I: 1. Fully disassembled the tool (handles, rails, tubes, plates, screws). 2. Removed loose rust and grime from all metal surfaces, including between plates and inside the body. 3. Neutralized remaining rust and wiped everything in light oil to protect the patina. 4. Cleaned, crack-stabilized, lightly sanded, and refinished the hardwood handles with oil and wax. 5. Reassembled the stack of 26 plates, aligned the tips into a straight “comb,” and reinstalled rails and hardware. 6. Finished metal surfaces with a thin coat of paste wax for a dry, low-sheen protective finish.

• Wall & shop decor: hang it over a workbench, in a body shop, or as a centerpiece in a garage gallery wall.
