Vintage simple bench plane with a single-iron, non-Bailey design, cleaned, tuned, sharpened, and ready for shop duty. This small utility plane pulls honest shavings and is ideal as a budget user for rough work, trimming, and general woodworking jobs where you don’t want to baby a collectible smoother.

Detailed description

Tool details

  • Vintage small bench / block-style utility plane
  • Simple one-piece cast body, no separate frog
  • Single iron only – no chipbreaker by design
  • Overall length approx. 7½ in.
  • Iron width approx. 1⅝ in.
  • Cast iron body with textured factory finish
  • Red-stained hardwood front knob

Condition

  • Solid casting with no cracks or repairs seen
  • Sole lapped on a granite reference block for good working contact at toe, mouth, and heel; light cosmetic pitting remains, as shown
  • Iron has good life left; some staining and patina but no active rust
  • Adjuster wheel and screw work smoothly after cleaning
  • Honest cosmetic wear, casting texture, and small dings from previous shop use

Restoration work performed

  • Fully disassembled, degreased, and cleaned
  • Rust and grime removed while preserving original patina
  • Sole trued “good enough for work” on granite plate – not ground dead-flat like a collector smoother
  • Iron back flattened at the cutting edge, bevel reground and honed; final honing on fine abrasives and burr removed
  • Adjuster screw and wheel cleaned, oiled, and tested through full travel
  • Wood knob lightly sanded, then finished with oil and wax for a smooth, dry feel
  • Metal surfaces treated with light oil and paste wax for protection

How it behaves

This is a simple single-iron utility plane, not a precision Bailey smoother. Expect:

  • Clean, serviceable shavings on softwood and general shop work
  • A smaller “sweet spot” than a premium plane
  • More suited to roughing, trimming, and utility work than final finishing passes

It’s perfect as a knock-around shop plane, a first hand plane for someone on a budget, or a secondary user you don’t mind loaning out.

Care

You’ll receive my printed care sheet with simple tips for oiling, storage, and touch-up sharpening so this little plane stays ready to work for years.

Dating note

Exact year and maker are unknown, but the design and construction place it in the mid-20th century. Etsy requires a decade selection, so I recommend choosing 1950s for the listing.
