Condition

This plane is fully functional and ready to work, with honest cosmetic wear consistent with age:

  • Body & sole: Cleaned and de-rusted with patina preserved. Sole has been lightly lapped on a granite plate for flatness; no cracks or breaks in the casting. Some staining and pitting remain on sides and non-critical areas, typical for a working vintage plane.
  • Iron & chip breaker: Original Keen Kutter iron and breaker. Back flattened at the edge, bevel sharpened, and chip breaker tuned to seat tight with no light gap. Some spotting and staining remain on the blade above the working area.
  • Frog & hardware: Frog and mating surfaces cleaned and re-seated for solid support. Depth and lateral adjusters move smoothly. Knurled brass adjuster knob turns freely.
  • Knob & tote: Original hardwood knob and tote, structurally sound with no wood cracks. The finish shows spider-web checking/crazing in the old varnish, which was left in place for a proper vintage look. No repairs or glue joints in the wood.

Overall: a clean, honest user plane with plenty of life left in the iron and all adjustments working as they should.

Restoration Work

This plane was taken down to parts and given a full functional restoration:

  • Fully disassembled and inspected
  • Rust removed with 3M abrasive pads and WD-40
  • Targeted Evapo-Rust (paper towel method) used on the body where mechanical cleaning couldn’t reach
  • Frog seat and frog face cleaned and trued, then re-installed and set for a proper mouth opening
  • Sole lightly lapped on a granite surface plate (minimal material removal; goal was functional flat, not mirror polish)
  • Iron and chip breaker cleaned, flattened, and sharpened; breaker edge tuned for tight contact
  • All small parts and hardware cleaned of rust and grime
  • Metal surfaces protected with Ballistol, moving parts lubricated with Hoppe’s oil
  • Sole and exterior metal finished with paste wax and buffed to a smooth, low-friction feel

Tested on clean stock after reassembly—plane produces smooth, continuous shavings and glides nicely on the workpiece (shavings in photos are from this exact plane).
