This vintage Stanley Bailey No. 5 jack plane with a corrugated sole has been cleaned, tuned, and sharpened in my shop and is ready to go right back to work.

Made in the USA with the classic STANLEY orange-field lever cap and BAILEY cast into the toe, this is a solid user-grade jack plane—perfect for bringing rough lumber into line, jointing shorter edges, and general bench work.

I’ve followed my standard restoration procedure: the plane was fully disassembled, de-greased, rust removed while preserving original japanning and patina, the sole lapped for flat bearing, and the iron sharpened to take fine, full-width shavings (see photos).

Specs

  • Maker: Stanley
  • Model: Bailey No. 5 jack plane (corrugated sole)
  • Country of manufacture: Made in USA (cast in front of knob)
  • Overall length: Approx. 14”
  • Sole: Corrugated (grooved)
  • Body finish: Original japanning with honest shop wear
  • Approx. era: 1960s (based on casting details and orange-field lever cap; likely mid-1960s–early 1970s)

Condition

  • Body: No cracks; no repairs; sole sits flat with no rocking. Corrugations are clean with light, even wear.
  • Japanning: Original; moderate loss in high-wear areas, consistent with a well-cared-for shop tool.
  • Iron & chipbreaker: Original Stanley set. Iron has plenty of life left; back flattened and bevel sharpened—ready to work.
  • Frog & hardware: Frog seat cleaned and mated; depth and lateral adjusters work smoothly. All screws present and functioning.
  • Tote: Solid with no structural cracks. Finish shows dings and scratches from years of use but feels good in the hand.
  • Knob: Structurally sound with visible finish wear and shop scars; purely cosmetic and does not affect use.

Please review the photos closely—what you see is the exact plane you’ll receive.

Use

This No. 5 is set up as a true user plane, not a shelf queen. It’s ideal for:

  • General bench work and stock prep
  • Breaking down rough boards
  • Light jointing of shorter edges
  • Anyone who appreciates a tuned vintage tool over a big-box special

Just set the iron for the cut you want and get to work.

Shipping & Packaging

I pack planes securely with plenty of padding and protect the cutting edge so it arrives ready to go. If you’re buying multiple tools from the shop, I’m happy to combine shipping when possible.
