Vintage Shapleigh “Diamond Edge” block plane, made in the USA and set up as a ready-to-use shop companion. This is a non-adjustable-mouth block plane in the classic 7” pattern, freshly tuned, sharpened, and test-cut on real wood.

Great little plane for breaking edges, easing chamfers, fitting trim, and general bench work when you don’t feel like dragging out a full-size smoother.

This pattern is straightforward and tough – fewer moving parts than the fancier adjustable-mouth block planes, which is exactly what many carpenters liked about them.

Condition Notes

This is a vintage user tool, not a museum piece. Expect:

Japanning is mostly present with scattered chips and rubs from honest use.
Lever cap and adjuster show light finish wear and small dings.
Sole shows a fresh lapping pattern from setup; you’ll see the scratch pattern from the plate, not factory grind marks.
Small cosmetic marks from decades in a toolbox, none affecting function.

No cracks, repairs, or structural damage. Everything seats tight and adjusts as it should.

Restoration & Tuning

This plane has been fully gone through in my shop:

Sole lapped on a flat reference surface and edges slightly eased to prevent catching.
Completely disassembled; body and parts brushed out and cleaned with mineral spirits.
Adjuster screw and plate de-rusted in an Evapo-Rust soak, then finished with 3M abrasive pad and WD-40.
Iron de-rusted, back flattened near the edge, bevel re-established and honed through finer grits, then final sharpened for clean shavings.
Front knob lightly sanded (320), finished with Tried & True oil and a hand-buffed beeswax topcoat.
Metal surfaces treated with Ballistol for corrosion protection; a micro-dot of Hoppe’s on the adjuster threads for smooth feel.
Sole and exterior metal waxed and buffed for a slick, dry-to-the-touch finish.
Reassembled, set up, and test-tuned until it produced consistent, clean shavings (see photos).

Unpack it, tweak the iron projection to taste, and it’s ready to go to work.
