Vintage 26" Wooden Jointer Plane

This vintage 26-inch wooden jointer plane was made for the Ogontz Tool Co house brand by Sandusky Tool Co and still carries its original Sandusky cast steel iron. I’ve cleaned and lightly restored it, stabilized age checks in the body, tuned the sole, and sharpened the iron so it can take shavings again while keeping the rich, dark patina that makes it a great display piece. Ready for use on the bench or as characterful decor in a woodshop, office, or studio.

Condition & restoration

This plane came to me with a dry, dirty surface, a dull iron, and several age checks in the body typical of a 100+ year old wooden tool. The sole was reasonably true and the mouth intact, so it was a good candidate for a light, sympathetic restoration.

Work performed: 1. Fully disassembled, inspected, and dust/old debris removed from the escapement and cavity. 2. Hairline checks at each end of the body were wicked with thin CA glue to stabilize them; no structural breaks through the sole were found. 3. Sole was trued on a granite reference surface with progressive grits, keeping the bearing areas at toe, ahead of the mouth, and heel flat for accurate work. 4. Body, wedge, and tote were cleaned with mineral spirits and lightly sanded by hand to preserve the original stamps and patina. 5. Finished with boiled linseed oil and a hand-buffed wax blend for a low-sheen, “old but cared for” look. 6. Sandusky iron and cap were cleaned of active rust while leaving honest patina around the stamp, then the back was flattened and the bevel sharpened with a slight camber suitable for a jointer. 7. Plane was reassembled, iron and wedge tension set, and test cuts taken on straight-grain stock to confirm it can still take shavings.

Flaws & character

• Age checks are visible at both ends of the body and along the top surface; these have been stabilized but remain visible and should be considered part of the tool’s character.
• Normal dents, scratches, and color variation from decades of use and storage.
• The plane is straight and usable but should not be compared to a modern precision jointer – it’s best suited for traditional hand tool work, lighter passes, or as a handsome display piece.
