Vintage USA-made Stanley Bailey No. 5 jack plane, fully cleaned, restored, sharpened, tuned, and test-cut. This is a later-production working Stanley rather than an early collectible example, making it a good choice for a woodworker who wants a functional vintage bench plane with plenty of honest age and character.

Detailed Description

Tool Details

This is a vintage Stanley Bailey No. 5 jack plane, made in the USA. The No. 5 is the classic general-purpose bench plane: long enough for flattening and jointing shorter work while still being maneuverable enough for general stock preparation.

This example is a later-production Stanley with the original-style plastic depth-adjustment wheel. The casting is marked BAILEY, MADE IN U.S.A., and No. 5, and the lever cap retains its orange STANLEY marking.

The plane has been restored as a working tool, not refinished to look new.

Condition

Good restored vintage working condition.

The cast-iron body, frog, iron, chipbreaker, hardware, knob, and tote were cleaned and serviced. The sole was lapped to establish a good working surface, and the iron was cleaned and sharpened. The chipbreaker was checked for continuous contact with the iron.

The original wooden knob and tote are solid and usable but retain considerable finish wear, scratches, discoloration, and other marks from their previous working life. The metal likewise retains staining, scattered pitting, scratches, finish loss, and other age-related wear.

The iron has remaining cosmetic corrosion/pitting from its previous condition, but it has been sharpened and the plane successfully test-cut after restoration.

Please review all photographs closely. They are part of the condition description and intentionally show the remaining wear.

Restoration Performed

  • Completely disassembled and cleaned
  • Rust and accumulated grime removed
  • Original japanning preserved where practical
  • Stanley lever-cap marking carefully preserved
  • Sole functionally lapped
  • Sole edges lightly relieved
  • Iron cleaned and sharpened
  • Chipbreaker cleaned and mating surface checked
  • Original knob and tote cleaned, smoothed, and conditioned
  • Original plastic depth adjuster retained
  • Metal components oiled and wax protected
  • Wooden components conditioned and waxed
  • Adjustment hardware lubricated
  • Reassembled, adjusted, and tuned
  • Successfully test-cut after restoration

The goal was a clean, stable, functional vintage tool, not removal of every pit, scratch, stain, or sign of its previous working life.

Ideal Use

A good general-purpose plane for traditional woodworking, furniture work, stock preparation, shop use, or as a first vintage Stanley bench plane.

The No. 5 is particularly useful for flattening boards, removing milling marks, preliminary surface preparation, working edges, and general bench-plane duties.

It would also make an attractive display piece for a traditional woodworking shop, but this one was restored with actual use in mind.
