Antique Sargent & Co. No. 3428 transitional jointer plane with an impressive 28-inch wooden body, Sargent adjustment hardware and February 3, 1891 patent marking. Conservatively restored while retaining more than a century of wear, patina and character. The cutter assembly contains replacement/non-original components, so this piece is offered primarily as antique woodworking, workshop or wall decor rather than as a collector-original user plane.

Detailed Description

Antique Sargent & Co. No. 3428 Transitional Jointer Plane

At approximately 28 inches long, this substantial Sargent wood-bottom jointer makes an impressive piece of early American woodworking history and workshop decor. The heel retains the SARGENT & CO. / No. 3428 marking, and the adjustment mechanism carries a PAT. FEB. 3 - 91 patent marking.

The wooden body, tote and knob retain the dents, stains, darkened areas, checks and surface wear accumulated through decades of use. I deliberately preserved that character rather than sanding the plane into a new-looking restoration.

Condition

The wooden body has multiple age checks, including visible checking at the ends and around the front portion of the body. The checks tested stable under hand pressure and appropriate areas were stabilized during restoration. The front knob also shows an age check. Please examine the detailed photographs closely; these are intentionally shown as part of the plane’s condition and history.

The metal hardware retains oxidation, staining, finish loss and age-related patina.

Important originality disclosure: the iron, chipbreaker and lever/top-cap assembly are not believed to be original to this plane. The plane was acquired with an incompatible, unusually thick Ohio Tool Co. iron that could not obtain proper cutter projection when installed in the correct orientation. It was replaced with a thinner period-style iron from parts stock. The present cutter assembly functions, but appears narrower than what would be ideal for this plane.

For that reason, although the plane is mechanically functional, I am selling it primarily as a historic display/decor piece and am not representing it as a complete, original or properly configured working Sargent No. 3428 jointer.

Restoration

The plane was carefully disassembled, cleaned and preserved. Metal components were cleaned of active rust and grime while retaining appropriate patina. The wooden body and handles were cleaned and preserved without aggressive refinishing. Stable age checks were treated where appropriate, and the incompatible cutter was replaced so the plane could once again be assembled in the proper configuration.

The goal was preservation rather than making a 100+ year-old tool look new.

Ideal For

This large 28-inch plane has excellent presence for a traditional woodworking shop, cabinetmaker’s shop, office, study or rustic/industrial display. It would also make an interesting addition to a collection of Sargent planes or early American woodworking tools.

A printed Moab Maverick Tools care sheet is included with the plane.
