Antique 16” Scioto Works wooden hand plane, made for the Ohio Tool Co. and dating approximately 1893–1907. Carefully restored while preserving its heavily aged surface, old repairs and working-tool character. The sole was corrected, iron cleaned and sharpened, and a crack at the tote base stabilized. A functional piece of early American woodworking history that also displays beautifully.

Detailed description

Tool Details

Antique 16-inch wooden bench plane marked SCIOTO WORKS on the toe. Scioto Works was associated with the Ohio Tool Company, and this example carries an Ohio Tool Co. Warranted iron. The iron is maker-appropriate, although I cannot verify that it has remained with this individual plane since new.

I date the plane approximately 1893–1907. It retains its wooden wedge, distinctive rear tote, wooden striking button and an old inset repair to the sole near the mouth.

Condition

This is a genuinely old working tool and its condition reflects that history.

The wooden body has extensive age-related checking and cracks, particularly through the toe and end grain. These remain plainly visible and have intentionally not been filled or disguised. The body was inspected during restoration and is currently stable.

There is an old inset repair in the sole near the mouth. This appears to be a repair from the plane’s previous working life and was deliberately preserved.

A crack at the base of the rear tote was stabilized with thin CA adhesive.

Expect dents, scratches, darkened wood, edge wear, staining, checks and other evidence of more than a century of use and storage. Please examine the photographs closely; they are an important part of the condition description.

Restoration

Restoration was deliberately conservative rather than cosmetic.

The wooden body was dry-cleaned while preserving the original aged surface and maker’s mark. The sole initially showed measurable twist and was carefully hand-lapped against a flat reference surface only until the plane sat solidly without rocking. I stopped there rather than removing additional original wood simply to make the sole cosmetically perfect.

The metal components were de-rusted and cleaned. The iron was sharpened, the chipbreaker mating surface checked, and the plane was reassembled and tuned. Wood surfaces were treated and protected while retaining the original patina.

The crack at the tote base was stabilized with thin CA.

Ideal Use

A good choice for a collector of early American woodworking tools, a traditional hand-tool woodworker who appreciates old wooden planes, or as authentic workshop, cabinet or shelf decor.

Because of the extensive age checking in the wooden stock, I would treat this as an antique tool suitable for careful traditional use rather than a modern production plane intended for hard daily service.

Care Sheet Included

A printed vintage-tool care sheet is included with the plane, covering basic cleaning, protection and storage so the new owner can maintain the restored finish.
