Vintage Stanley No. 9¼ block plane, Made in USA and estimated to date to the 1960s. This 6-inch general-purpose woodworking plane has been carefully cleaned, de-rusted, sharpened, lubricated, waxed, tuned, and tested while retaining its original blue finish, age, and working-tool character.

Detailed Description

Tool Details

This is a genuine vintage Stanley No. 9¼ block plane, made in the USA and measuring approximately 6 inches long.

The plane retains its distinctive original blue factory finish with raised STANLEY lettering at the toe. The iron carries the later notched-rectangle STANLEY / MADE IN U.S.A. trademark.

Based on the blue-finish production period and other construction details, I estimate this example to date to approximately 1962–1967, so it is listed in Etsy’s 1960s decade. Dating vintage Stanley tools is not always exact, and the date should be considered an informed estimate rather than a specific year of manufacture.

Condition

Good restored vintage working condition.

This is an approximately 60-year-old working tool and still shows its history. The original blue finish has scratches, chips, worn areas, discoloration, and other normal evidence of previous use. Metal surfaces retain areas of patina and staining rather than being polished to look new.

The sole has been cleaned and lapped while retaining normal cosmetic staining and marks from its working life. The adjustable mouth is intact and functional, the depth and lateral adjustments operate correctly, and the original-style hardware remains in place.

The iron has been cleaned and sharpened and has plenty of usable life remaining. The plane was assembled, tuned, and test-cut after restoration; the first photo shows actual shavings produced by this plane.

Please review all photographs closely. They are part of the condition description.

Restoration Performed

The goal of this restoration was to return the plane to useful working condition while preserving its vintage character rather than making it appear new.

  • Plane completely disassembled and inspected
  • Dirt, old residue, and loose oxidation removed
  • Rust treated and metal surfaces cleaned
  • Original blue factory finish preserved
  • Sole lapped and working edges lightly dressed
  • Iron cleaned and sharpened
  • Adjustment mechanisms cleaned and lubricated
  • Metal surfaces treated with protective oil and wax
  • Plane reassembled, adjusted, tuned, and test-cut

No repainting was performed.

Ideal Use

A practical vintage block plane for general woodworking, trimming, fitting, end-grain work, edge cleanup, and other small planing jobs.

It would also make a good addition to a Stanley or vintage-tool collection, traditional woodworking bench, or workshop display.
