Exceptional Model T-era automotive socket and ratchet collection, likely incorporating Chicago Manufacturing & Distributing Co. A-series tools, housed in an early fitted steel case. The set includes a single-direction ratchet mechanism, universal joint, extension, cast A-series tools, and a large assortment of early pressed-steel hex and square sockets. Conservatively cleaned and preserved while retaining its original patina and working-tool character.

Antique Automotive Socket Set — Likely Chicago Manufacturing A-Series

A substantial early automotive mechanic’s socket set dating approximately to the late 1910s–1920s, housed in its fitted riveted steel carrying case.

The set was originally identified to me as a Model T tool set. Subsequent research points more specifically toward Chicago Manufacturing & Distributing Co. for the cast A-series components. Documented Chicago sets used the same A-series numbering, including an A6 spark-plug wrench, A10 universal component and A25 extension. Chicago socket sets were sold during the Model T era, including through a 1919 Ford Owners’ Supply Book.

No manufacturer’s name has been found on this particular set, so I am selling it as likely Chicago Manufacturing rather than guaranteeing the attribution, and I am describing it as Model T-era rather than claiming documented Ford factory provenance.

Tool Details

The collection includes:

• Large single-direction ratchet mechanism, reversible in use by flipping the handle over.

• A18 through A24 cast/malleable-iron hex sockets

The pressed-steel hex assortment spans approximately 5/16” through 1-9/32”, with many uncommon 1/32” increments. The set also contains square sockets through approximately 1-9/32”.

Case

The case itself is an interesting piece of early tool construction. The lid is pressed from a single sheet of steel, while the lower case uses a separate flat floor and perimeter band riveted together. Internal steel dividers organize the sockets.

The original case has been preserved rather than refinished.

Condition

This is an approximately century-old working tool collection and shows appropriate wear, oxidation, discoloration, pitting, scratches and patina.

The ratchet functions and was cleaned and lubricated.

One pressed-steel socket is damaged, with a split in the socket wall; this is shown clearly in the listing photographs. There are also duplicate sockets in a one size, and one appears different from the primary assortment and may be a later addition.

Because the exact original factory contents of this large collection have not been established, I am not representing it as a factory-complete set. Please use the photographs as the definitive reference for everything included.

Restoration / Preservation

The set received a conservative preservation treatment:

• Removed accumulated dirt and grime
• Removed loose surface oxidation as appropriate
• Cleaned and lubricated the ratchet mechanism
• Cleaned and stabilized the steel case
• Protected metal surfaces with oil and wax
• Preserved original tool markings, manufacturing texture and patina

Nothing was sandblasted, highly polished or repainted. The objective was to make the collection clean, stable and presentable without erasing a century of working history.
