Antique Cobbler Lasting Pliers – Union Whitcher No. 3 Shoemaker Tool, 1887 Patent Hammer Tack Puller

Antique Union Whitcher No. 3 cobbler’s lasting pliers, an unusual American shoemaking combination tool with serrated leather-gripping jaws, integral hammer and tack-pulling claw. The Whitcher design was patented October 25, 1887; this example retains age-earned patina and readable period markings and has been conservatively cleaned and protected for continued use or display.

Lasting pinchers were specialized shoemaking tools used to grip and tension the leather upper over a shoe last. The built-in hammer allowed the shoemaker to set tacks without putting down the pinchers, while the claw provided a means of pulling misplaced or damaged tacks. Period examples are documented with the same hammer-and-puller combination.

Good antique working condition with substantial original surface character
Pivot, jaws and serrations remain intact
Jaw teeth show normal age/use wear but remain well defined
Hammer face retains its original crosshatched texture
General staining, dark patina, scratches, small pits and working wear remain throughout
One outside tooth of the three-tooth tack-pulling claw has an old chipped tip
Both V-shaped tack-pulling notches remain intact
No attempt was made to weld or reconstruct the damaged tooth
Markings are worn but several remain readable under appropriate lighting

Restoration

Conservatively hand cleaned with a brush
Light WD-40 and 3M pad treatment used to remove loose oxidation and surface grime
Original patina, tool marks and shallow stamps deliberately preserved
Protected with Ballistol
Finished with a thin coat of paste wax
No aggressive polishing or refinishing
No repair or alteration to the chipped claw tooth
