Vintage Stanley No 12 1/2 Veneer Scraper Plane Sweetheart SW Rosewood Woodworking Tool

Vintage Stanley No. 12½ veneer scraper plane with its distinctive rosewood sole and Stanley SW Sweetheart cutter. Conservatively cleaned, lubricated, waxed, and fitted with a freshly burnished scraper edge. The adjustments operate properly, and the plane has been function-tested on hardwood and produces proper curled scraper shavings, as shown in the photos.

Detailed description

A genuine vintage Stanley No. 12½ scraper plane from the Sweetheart era, equipped with its rosewood sole, dual wooden handles, adjustable scraper mechanism, and Stanley SW cutter.

Stanley designed the No. 12½ specifically for scraping veneers and difficult wood surfaces. Unlike a conventional bench plane, the cutter works with a burnished scraper edge rather than taking a conventional planing cut. The No. 12½ differs from the standard No. 12 by the addition of the wooden sole. Stanley produced the model from approximately 1905 through 1943.

This example carries a clearly marked STANLEY / SW / MADE IN U.S.A. Sweetheart cutter. Based on the Sweetheart-era cutter, it is listed on Etsy as a 1920s tool; a broader circa 1920s–1930s date is appropriate.

Condition

• Complete and mechanically functional
• Original Stanley No. 12½ cast body
• Rosewood sole remains intact and serviceable
• Wooden handles are solid with attractive original age and wear
• Strong surviving black japanning
• Brass adjustment hardware operates properly
• Stanley SW Sweetheart cutter is clearly marked
• Cutter has staining, scratches, and normal evidence of previous use
• Metal surfaces retain scratches, discoloration, finish loss, and other honest age-related wear
• No attempt was made to polish away the tool's original character
• Please examine all photographs closely for cosmetic condition

Restoration

This plane received a deliberately conservative cleaning and service rather than a cosmetic refinishing.

• Fully disassembled
• Cleaned with mineral spirits
• A few small areas were lightly treated with WD-40 and a fine 3M abrasive pad
• Cutter faces were lightly cleaned while preserving the Stanley SW marking
• Metal components were oiled
• Cutter edge was prepared and freshly burnished
• Components were waxed for protection
• Reassembled and adjusted
• Function-tested on hardwood

The wooden sole was not sanded or flattened, and the wooden handles were not stripped or refinished. Original surfaces and age were preserved wherever practical.

Ready to Use

The plane has been tested after servicing and is cutting properly. The first listing photo shows the actual plane with shavings produced during its final test. As with any scraper plane, cutter projection and angle can be adjusted to suit the wood and the desired cut. The scraper burr will eventually require normal maintenance and reburnishing with use.
